Abstract

A structural position that is not profitable for transwomen groups, they are frequently marginalized, isolated, and rarely included in decision-making processes; this is one of the obstacles to the practice of democracy in Indonesia. The study of oppression is well-known and is frequently associated with the topic of vulnerable social groups. Sanggar Swara exists as a young transwomen group to empower its members and actively participate in networking with other community organizations in voicing issues (other than gender and minority issues) in society through demonstrations or social media campaigns, such as health issues, the environment, land grabbing, labor wages, and other injustices. By fostering an inclusive environment, they position themselves as members of society. Society will no longer look at transgender people through one lens and will be able to see the potential that exists within transwomen in the same way that they see the potential of others. The author employs the ideas of Iris Mrion Young, who classifies oppression into five faces: exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence. In the methodological aspect, this research uses a descriptive qualitative method with Van Manen's phenomenological approach to examine how the incident was captured by humans so that it becomes part of the experience and awareness of the transgender group which of course is associated with the five faces of oppression theory to identify what oppression is experienced by transwomen.
